Soft Bait Basics

The basic components

The basic components of any soft bait system consist of:

  • a suitable specific type rod and reel loaded with braid
  • the braid is connected with the correct knot to a fluorocarbon trace
  • the trace is connected by a loop knot to a jig head
  • the soft bait is fitted onto the jig head.

It is important to use as light line strength as possible. This will also have influence on the sink rate that in turn directly affects your success in getting the fish.

sea anchor

Probably one of the most important things, that any soft bait angler should have, is a correctly sized sea anchor (drogue) for your intended fishing vessel. A sea anchor not only slows you down when drifting, but also gives the boat an element of stealth if the motor is switched off and you quietly approach your intended drift area.

Using a drogue can take a bit to get use to, especially when you have current and wind all working to alter the intended course. It will continue to challenge you every time while out on the water!

The importance of keeping your noise level down while working the shallows could be the difference between having success or failing.
